Perhaps the most important thing that would come from this trip is the leadership experience I would gain. I believe I will learn patience, tolerance, and a greater understanding of people different than myself. We all have individual gifts and our individuality is our strength as long as we work together as a team that values and uses each strength.

I am very interested in experiencing the culture of Peru and the geography of the southern hemisphere. Seeing and experiencing the landscape, Inca ruins, and species of animals and plants in Peru will be a dream come true for me.

I have been involved in athletics since I was five-years-old. In the athletic world I have learned to work together as a team, to practice and prepare, and to maintain a good attitude. During my middle school years, I was chosen to be a Peacemaker. Peacemakers are like peer mediators. I learned to listen to both sides without interjecting my own beliefs and feelings, to be fair to all people in offering an opportunity for them to be heard, and to be honest when I was called to give input and to encourage honesty in others. Peacemakers was probably the most influential experience on my ideas of leadership.

Good leaders keep in mind the welfare of the people they lead. They look for a peaceful way to mediate conflicts, as well as the most efficient solution to challenges that meet the group. A good leader is prepared, has vision, and is open to the ideas and feelings of others.
