Megan

My name is Megan, I’m 18 years old, and I live in Riverview, Florida which is right outside of Tampa. I have lived here for five years now. My dad just retired this year from the Air Force. So this means I have moved a lot. I was born in Las Vegas. I moved to New Mexico when i was 3 and then to Aviano, Italy when i was 8. In 7th grade I moved here and will go to either University of Florida or University of Central Florida next fall. I haven’t decided where i want to go yet. But for right now I’m just having fun my senior year of high school and enjoying all the moments of it. Well, I love being outdoors. This past year I played on the girls’ varsity golf team. It was a lot of fun. I never thought I would like it. I thought it was lame at first but when I actually tried and got into the sport, I fell in love with it.

And oh yeah, all my vision stuff. I have Retinitis Pigmentosa which is a hereditary eye disease in which my vision slowly decreases. My acurity is 20/200. I have night blindness; I also only have my central vision left. I know how to use a cane and read braille but i don’t need to at this time. I really don’t let my vision get the best of me. I think everyone has an obstacle in life that they need to overcome to gain strength and my eye condition is mine. You wouldn’t know that I am visually impaired just by looking at me and this is the worst part for me. I’m not blind but I’m not “normal” when it comes to sight. So its like I’m stuck in the middle. I still am active in a lot of things at school. I am the Executive Officer of Riverview High School’s chapter of National Honor Society. I am the Vice President of Rho Kappa, my school’s social studies honor society. I am also President of VIP2 Club for 3 consecutive years now. The VIP2 Club is a county wide club in which visually impaired students from 6th to 12th grade get together and interact.
