essay / vastness Come Together Like the Sky
By .
Vastness. Is anything vaster than the sky? Some things that we think of are huge! But are they really anything in comparison to the sky? A city, a country, a continent, a planet are all huge, but they are nothing more than a speck compared to the deep, dark, black night sky. You can’t see it all at once, because it is like the Earth: it is all around you. Looking up into the night sky, I think of a television that is turned off. It is dark, and nearly looks dead. But if you turn it on, it floods with light, color, and sound. If you look at the sky in a certain way, it floods with light, color, and sound. It floods so much that it floods into you. You feel illuminated and inspired. Then you are filled with the night sky. You are a soaring comet, the largest planet, the brightest star. Another night, I look up again into the deep, vast sky. Though it is so black, it is also so bright. How can something be so dark, but yet so bright? Looking up into it and trying but failing to take it all in, I realize more than ever that I am just one single person. We are each just one person. But together we make up the human race, seven billion people strong. Most of us feel insignificant among that number, but even as a whole, we are insignificant among the sky, stars, planets, galaxies, and the universe. Then as an individual, I am even more insignificant among the sky, stars, planets, galaxies, and the universe. I feel so small, so little, so tiny. But a little thought keeps nagging at me: it only takes one person. It only takes one person to start a war, for example. It only takes one person to set off a chain reaction. It only takes one person to change or even end another person’s life. The insignificant feeling that I had before turns into a feeling of significance. I realize what I could do, what I could change, and who I could become. I can change anything with enough willpower. With enough willpower, I can save a life or many lives. I can help to end thirst and starvation. Together, we could easily end thirst and starvation. But we aren’t all joining together. Some of us just don’t care about other people. But if we do come together, like the sky, as a whole, then the effect we have could be amazing. But to get this amazing effect, we need to come together. We must come together. To do this, we can look at the sky for guidance. Despite its vastness, the sky is still one thing. It is all one thing together: the stars, comets, asteroids, planets, black holes, all of it. We too, can put aside our differences; we can all come together, for the betterment of humanity.
