International travel has provided my child with a worldly perspective not only in respect to his Global Explorers travels but in his everyday life. Even at his young age, he is able to confidently speak about world issues and advocate for the country that he has visited. It has been a positive life changing experience that has included a higher level of maturity.
An important concept to teach young people today is that they must give back to their community, country and the world. Through Global Explorers’ worldwide community service programs, my child has learned firsthand what this means. Whether it be providing medical supplies to a local doctor or painting a school house, these experiences left my child with a true understanding of what it means to help someone in need and the importance of providing these services.
Participating in the Blind Inca Trail program provided him with a profound experience. At the beginning of the trip I wondered how you could join 18 teenage kids together from across the country, half of which were blind or visually impaired and expect that they could mesh as a group. The incredible result was that they did indeed bond and together they were able to accomplish the goal of reaching Machu Picchu as a team. My son’s perspective on the capabilities of blind and visually impaired people is not only of admiration but he has now acquired a great understanding of how very capable a blind person really can be not only on the trails in South America and in airports but also in everyday life.
An issue of any parent that is contemplating international travel for their child is one of safety.
